Im getting ready to order a Kranoi and have just one "tiny" problem The Kranoi has a crest ( which definately very good ) BUT the horse hair is the wrong colour
I need to find a way to change the colour of the horse hair from "sand" to a nice respectable "Spartan Red"... does anybody know which dyes etc are best for the job
Any feedback will be greatly appreciated

Hi, Could you please, post a link or a photo? It would be very nice to have a look on it.
I would be interested too in colouring techniques, and it would be interesting too which colours where used and which where practicable to do for oneself. Kind regards Strategos

Ill gladly post a link / picture in the next few days, no problem
The main problem isnt "which type of dye would have been used in the ancient world"..... more.... how do I get a good red colour into the horsehair which will STAY red !!!
A pretty important point is that I am quite USELESS in this sort of thing I am more of a "fact finder" and "connecting point" for other reenactors who also deal with ancient Greece so practical experience in: cutting, glueing, making my own material is VERY limited (for the moment !)

Hi Othryades,
is it white coloured horse hair? Other colours will not work!
Then you should try to dye with the heaviest recent hair dyes, probably from a goth or punk shop!? Before dying clean the hair from fat.
The antique way was maybe with textile (wool) dyes. Should work.

Heres the details (as promised, especially for Stratgos ) for anyone who is interested : I have ordered it from "Aus Omas Truhe ", guess you are all aware of the company from ebay etc.
The Kranoi was / is under the title of: AH6058BP Helm der Korinther, Griechenland,500 v.Chr.m. Helmbusch The "simple" model without the horsehair crest is naturally cheaper but I think that the price is a good one, not too cheap but also not too expensive.
Price for the Kranoi: €124.00 Postage and packing: €11.50 TOTAL PRICE: €135.50
Ive attached a couple of pictures of the Kranoi
p.s. The inner skull cap is also included with the Kranoi

Huch! Its the same one which I was looking for !! I was thinking about it since last summer, but unfortunately, not enough money, not enough time.......... Yes, the price is a real good one, and the crest is better then most Depeeka Crests. I see, now i must be creative with the one i will buy, maybe a black and white crest, or some black paint on the front.......... Kind regards Strategos
I have had a look at the "Kult of Athena" website which is usually good with prices etc. Taking into account the exchange rate from US Dollars to Euro...... the Kranoi is cheaper here in Germany !!!!
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- @ Strategos Check out the basic Corinithian Kranoi without the crest, I think it was being sold for about €90. Im sure that a crest etc can be added to it using the great info on the Hetairoi website ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Ill let you all know about the fit of the Kranoi ( My head is quite big and I have had problems fitting into most of the "Corinths" ) and also the quality of it after I have recieved it

The hooks will have to be "pushed together" to let them fit into the wooden slots in the crest. The crest is held in place by the pressure of the hooks pushing against the wooden slots.
The fit: The only negative thing about the Kranoi is the noseguard...... it is exactly in line with the cheek guards and presses against my nose Does anybody know the best position on the noseguard to pull it out a bit without breaking it off ?
Other than that, full vision.... a nice fit on the ears and well...... the lads at work were BLOWN AWAY by the Kranoi

The noseguard problem has been solved.... just a bit of physical pressure (fingers and thumbs ) and I now have a Kranoi which doesnt try and break my nose
Have a great weekend everybody
Othryades
